This Week in Earnings – Q3'26

U.S. Banks in our Sector Beat

Earnings officially kicked off this week, with many of the largest U.S. Banks at the center of financing the AI buildout. They cited resilient consumer spending, improving net interest income, and unprecedented demand for capital from both corporates and governments. While management teams remain optimistic about the underlying strength of the U.S. economy on net, a more cautionary tone emerged when discussing how persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical tensions are creating increasingly choppier conditions.

Consumer resilience remains a central theme of this quarter’s commentary. Despite elevated borrowing costs and accelerating inflation, consumers continue to spend, travel, and meet their financial obligations. Credit quality and delinquency trends remain stable, though executives acknowledge that prolonged higher rates could eventually weigh on household finances and broader economic activity.

Higher-for-longer is also becoming the prevailing expectation. Management teams cite structural forces, notably insatiable global demand for capital, as the main cause of recent weakness in the bond market. While higher rates are expected to support net interest income, management teams are closely watching deposit behavior and funding costs. However, many executives have pushed back on the notion that elevated rates necessarily spell trouble for economic growth or capital markets activity, given their surprising resilience.

Meanwhile, AI remains a theme in bank operations, with management teams increasingly quantifying productivity gains, faster product development, and cost efficiencies. While the benefits are becoming more tangible, executives acknowledge that translating these gains into meaningful earnings contributions will take time, particularly at larger institutions.

Overall, U.S. Banks remain on solid footing. Resilient consumers, favorable earnings outlooks, and extraordinary capital demand support continued optimism. The next test will be whether these tailwinds can endure a prolonged period of elevated rates and growing geopolitical uncertainty, and whether banks can capitalize on the investment cycle without compromising credit discipline.

Key themes from our analysis:

  • Macro Conditions: Water getting choppier, but still no storm clouds directly overhead
  • Outlooks: Banks are able to look through the fog, but admit uncertainty clouds the path forward… still, no resting on their laurels
  • Consumer Health: Continued resilience in the face of adversity
  • Competition for Capital: Banks see an insatiable demand for capital
  • Rates and Yields: Higher for longer remains the base case
  • Tangible AI Benefits: Management teams frame benefits primarily through the lens of efficiency gain and workforce optimization
